Clubs Welcome Disaster Relief Funding

24 Mar 2010

Clubs WA welcomes the Premier’s announcement yesterday to open natural disaster relief funding to  those affected by the storms on Monday. The funding will be made available through the Western Australian Government Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (WANDRRA).

“The funding will be much needed for our not for profit community clubs who have been affected by the storms. Repairs to buildings and water damage to carpets can take several weeks, causing those affected further trading losses. The funding will speed the process for repairs to damages meaning less impact to the Western Australian community” Executive Director, Mr Peter Seaman said.

Club damage recorded so far includes:

Willetton Sports Club

-     windows completely shattered, water damage, flooding, car park debris power outage

Wonthella Bowling Club

 -     flooded greens, club closure

Italian Club Fremantle

 -       flooded carpark, internal water damage to flooring

Royal Perth Yacht Club

-      minor ceiling damage, minor damage to 50 boats

Willetton Basketball Club

 -   power outage, internal water entry to basketball stadium, club closure

East Fremantle Yacht Club

 - landslide from river side bank to club

Hollywood Bowling Club

- bar and hall area flooded, windows broken, serious damage to wooden doors and cars in the car park damaged

Clubs WA office and staff were also affected during the storms, with water damage to the office and damage to a staff member’s car parked in the staff carpark. Power outage also caused a 6 hour business closure.

“Clubs WA is gathering further details of storm affected clubs and will distribute this information as soon as we can. The club sector has once again proved their commitment to the WA community during times of need and the wonderful effort of so many volunteers involved in the clean up process already has been amazing!” Peter said.

Clubs are urged to apply for funding through WANDRAA which is administered by FESA. Visit http://www.fesa.wa.gov.au for further details.
