On 14 October 2008, the Federal Government announced a $10.4 billion Economic Security Strategy to strengthen the Australian economy and support Australian households. The Federal Government's one off economic stimulus payment to families includes a $1000 per child plus up to $2100 per household payment for welfare recipients. Centrelink will make this payment directly into bank accounts over the fortnight commencing 8 December 2008.
These payments may mean that licensees will experience an increase in sales over that time.
As a consequence of these payments, Director General of Department of Racing, Gaming & Liquor, Mr Barry Sargeant, has urged licensees to be vigilant over the period and to work closely with local authorities such as the WA Police, so as to ensure that those communities which currently suffer the effects of alcohol related harm or where there are liquor restrictions in place, are not further disadvantaged by irresponsible and high risk consumption of liquor.
Clubs WA Executive Director, Mr Peter Seaman, said "While clubs are not the focus of the Department's concern, Clubs WA is supportive of any initiative that encourage the responsible service and consumption of alcohol".
Significant efforts have been made by licensees and various communities throughout the State over recent years to reduce the level of harm from the consumption of liquor and whatever licensees can do voluntarily to support that work would be appreciated.
