Training Requirements for Liquor Employees

27 Sep 2007

The new Liquor Control Act sets out a host of additional training requirements for staff employed in the sale or supply of liquor. All licensees, approved managers, supervisory and general staff must complete training approved by the Director of Liquor Licensing.

The licensee and primary approved manager must complete the so called Short Course in Liquor Licensing. Subsequent approved managers may at the moment complete the shorter Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol course (the nationally accredited unit of competency) within three months of starting employment. This is a temporary measure to ease the transititon between licensing acts so eventually all approved managers will be required to sit the Short Course.

Any supervisory staff must also complete the Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol course. Licensees may choose for general staff to attend the Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol course or a separate non-accredited abridged course.

Licensees as at 7 May 2007 have a 1 year grace period to ensure staff complete the appopriate course. New staff will have four weeks from the date of employment to complete their training.

Licensees must keep a register recording details of each staff-member's training. If the training requirements are not met with, the Department may impose a range of penalties.
